The medication Sildenafil Citrate was discovered by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and introduced to the public as Viagra in 1989. Touted as a miracle cure for erectile dysfunction, the medication quickly became a huge seller. In 2008, Viagra sales reached $1.934 million in the United States. Pfizer recruited high profile pitchmen to sell the drug, including former Senator Bob Dole and soccer legend Pele. Though it proved to be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension (a type of high blood pressure), adverse side effects were soon reported.

The results of the study have yet to be duplicated, so Viagra has not been proven a cause of melanoma. But, the study shows a strong connection between the medication and that form of cancer.
